Plain English
How business energy rates actually work
Energy contracts are full of jargon. Here's what the terms on your bill and your quote really mean.
Kilowatt-hour (kWh)
The unit your electricity is measured and billed in. A commercial electricity rate is usually quoted as cents per kWh — multiply it by your monthly kWh to see what the supply portion of your bill will be.
Cubic metre (m³) and gigajoule (GJ)
The units natural gas is measured in. Ontario bills are typically in m³; Alberta bills are typically in GJ. Your gas rate is quoted per unit, the same way electricity is quoted per kWh.
Fixed rate vs. variable rate
A fixed rate locks your price per unit for the length of your contract, so your supply cost stays predictable. A variable (or floating) rate moves with the market — cheaper in some months, more expensive in others.
Supplier vs. utility
Your supplier sells you the energy; your local utility still delivers it and maintains the lines and pipes. Switching supplier changes your rate — it does not change who fixes an outage or interrupts your service.
Deregulated energy markets
Ontario and Alberta are Canada's deregulated energy markets, which is where businesses can choose their own electricity and natural gas supplier rather than defaulting to the regulated rate.
The supply portion of your bill
Only part of your bill is the energy itself — the rest is delivery, transmission and regulatory charges set by others. A supplier can only change the supply portion, so that's where any savings come from.
